Job Description:

KAUST is a newly formed University supporting cross discipline research and education programs. The bio-science and biotechnology core laboratory, one of the seven integrated core laboratories, is seeking an advanced technician or specialist for support of the cell-sorting facility within the bio-sciences and biotechnology core laboratory. This position will initially focus on setting up the cell-sorting facility, performing basic calibration and testing of systems as well as some training, both received and delivered. Once operational, the facility is expected to provide basic service in support of faculty research interests as well as student guidance of basic staining, sample analysis and sorting as well as data analysis. Beyond the basic responsibilities, a progressive incorporation of novel technologies and methods, chosen to efficiently fill any common faculty need, will require adapting to advances in the technology underlying the discipline. The instruments currently in the pre-set-up process are a SORP BD LSR Fortessa 5 laser Cell Analyzer and a BD Influx 4 laser 10 fluorescent detectors and sort module. A Silicon biosystems DEPArray is in an evaluation stage to support single-cell isolation.

Requirements:

This position requires proven skills in all of the basic aspects of flow type cell analysis and sorting including instrument operation and maintenance, sample preparation, sample staining and the use of instrument vendor supplied software. Strongly preferred candidates will have experience in the design and development of staining procedures, direct experience with the instruments or those similar and an ability for problem solving in method development and validation.

The person awarded this position will be key to the operation of the facility and to progress in the research projects with dependence on the facility. An ability to communicate respectfully and effectively with non-expert users is required. An ability to communicate patiently with non-native English speakers is also required. New facility start-up will require the establishment of record keeping systems tracking a range of items such as reagents and order status or tasks for compliance with institutional safety policies. Sample tracking and delivery of data files require excellent organizational skills and some familiarity or ability to learn the use of a LIMS system.

The ideal candidate will possess a logical approach to the solution of problems with the capacity for original thinking. Candidates will be asked to present previous experiences and successes during the interview process to demonstrate their abilities and the relevance of their experience.
